If you want to identify all the people that should be taken into account for your project, you should generate a list before you go too far.

Why generate a list?

Well, it's easy to forget how many people are actually needed to create amazing experiences for others. It’s always more than you initially think. Those who thoroughly consider the people who might be touched by a project, tend to discover better insights than those who don’t, increasing their chances of innovation and success.

There are different ways to generate a list. You could:

  • Brainstorm on your own or with colleagues.

  • Draw from previous project material.

  • You could look at how others do it.

There are many ways and in time you may develop your own approach.

What makes a good approach? One that:

  • Opens things up before defining your focus

  • Encourages collaboration and iteration, and

  • Sets you up well for the next step.

A structured stakeholder list has those qualities and is one we’ve used many times, with hundreds of organisations. Consider it “tried and true”. It gets results.

We recommend you:

  • Generate categories of people

  • Select the top categories

  • Generate individual stakeholders for each category

  • Discuss the stakeholders to make sure everyone understands each

  • Decide who should be the primary focus

  • Reflect on the work before considering the next steps

Now that you know the key steps to generate a list of people we hope you’re inspired to make a start.
